Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens have an equal say
in the decisions that affect their lives. Democracy allows people to
participate equally—either directly or through elected representatives—in the
proposal, development, and creation of laws. It encompasses social,
economic and cultural conditions that enable the free and equal practice of political self-determination.
India proudly
flaunts its democratic achievement at any global stage. India is the largest
democracy in the Globe. The concept of democracy / Republic govt emerges from
North America when 13 colonies of British Empire stood up against the
discrimination and formed a new Govt different than imperialism, Govt By the
people for the people. Democratic pattern of administration is where people
have a Freedom to choose their representatives.
Democratic mechanism in India
In India the Election for Cabinet assembly and state
legislative assembly held after 5 years.
The country has three main national parties: the
Congress, Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), and the Communist Party. The Indian
National Congress has governed the country for 3/4th's of the time since India
got independence in 1947, under the de
facto one party system and now, under the Dominant-party system. At the level
of its states, many regional parties stand for elections to state legislatures,
every five years.
In state condition is not too different Almost every single State ruled By congress in initial years of Independence. Current political states from last 2 decade shows that In Uttar Pradesh..Samajwadi Party –Bahujan Samajwadi Pary , Bihar ..Lalu Prasad yadav lead rashtriya janta dal adn now Janta Dal United. In West benga 35 years of communist regime , Kerla dominated by Communist regime , tamil Nadu Office of state either belongs to Karunnanidhi family or JayLalita”s family.

The office of state or Centre is occupied by not more
than 20 Family in India. 126 crore population ruled by not more than 20 family
.......If this is a reason to cheer about our democracy then, we need to
restructure the existing mechanism.
"This existing mechanism of democracy resulted
In Oligarchy (A state ruled by a group of people)."
I am not demeaning these parties and there practices but the democratic pattern that practiced in India, which resulted in a situation like this .
Flaw of Indian Democracy:
Democracy in India letting Minority rules over majority. I didn’t have stats to support the opinion but only brand politician win election with majority votes.
Lets take an example 12 candidate fight for a
constituency. Winner got 30% of total votes casted and other 11 got remaining
70% votes casted. The person who will use office is the one who is not a favourite
of 70% population. 70% of voters are
against him then too he represents the office. Ironical but true and this type of
situation like winner concedes less than 50% vote is true for almost 70% of
representative
What Democracy did to India ?
India may be the world’s
largest democratic society but that doesn't mean that fighting corruption here
is any easier. If it did anything, then to make the struggle more complex.
Corruption has now settled into almost every corner of India’s vast
bureaucracy. It’s got so bad in recent years that now nearly half of India’s
population has had firsthand experience in paying bribes. Since 1995 Transparency
International’s annual Corruption Perception Index has been ranking
countries/territories “based on how corrupt a country’s public sector is
perceived to be.” In 2011 Indian citizens gave their country a rating of 3.1
out of 10 (10 being least corrupt). This score ranks India 95th out of the 183
countries measured in the study. What Democracy did to India ?
The costs of widespread corruption are hard to quantify, but it is easy to connect the dots between these illicit activities and a wide array of social and economic hardships that consistently materialize in their wake. Some sources estimate that public officials skim off more than 18 billion USD annually: others say that if you include the entire underground economy, that number amounts to roughly half of the nation’s GDP or 640 billion USD. The bribe system often dictates the way in which government officials make decisions on land development, government contracts, and who receives treatment at government hospitals.
This corruption is some time also lead to violence even death sometimes of those who refuse to give a bribe or sometimes those who refuse to take bribe.
Satyendra Nath Dubey Murder case is just an example.
The infrastructure disability of India is not unknown to us. 1/4th population still go to open fields for sanitation. India has 0.9 beds per 1000 people while Pakistan has 2 per 1000 people.
Condition of common man is so poor and the condition of rulers selected by people. Aah............... we must laugh on ourselves.
“Democracy (in Indian context) is nothing but a choice to choose the ruler among a group of people. “
The recent scams clearly indicate that policies are manipulated by politicians to benefit corporate houses. That means in true terms these oligarchies are just broker of Business people. India is being ruled by Capitalists.
Is democracy really a flop idea or It can be fixed ?
Democracy has all these above mentioned but yet it is better than, Monarchy, Imperialism and feudalism .These flaws can be fixed by introducing new changes to existing mechanism .
Empowering Judiciary and pace up the process in time of a trial will help Democracy to re-establish it self . A delay in Justice is injustice itself. The very basic ideas to keep our democracy alive by our fore fathers is to enable people with education, ensure freedom for media , justice for every Indian.
Introduce Right to Recall:
Current mechanism ensures a 5 year term in office for selected representative . In these 5 years representatives can screw the system by abusing the powers belong to office and make a big money for themselves. Common man feel helpless. Introduction of Impeachment of representative coupled with fast track or special courts will bring a hope for common man and an exit door option for representative .system has given them power to use office then it must enable common man to ensure the responsibilities too.
Introduce Right to Reject :
More
recently, National Election Watch (NEW), a nationwide campaign comprising of
more than 1200 NGOs and other citizen led organizations, which is working on
electoral reforms and democracy and governance-related issues has demanded that
the electronic voting machine must have a button which says “None of the
Above”.
It
is said that
If
there will be a provision for “None of the Above” – which would give the people
an option not to vote for any candidate if they do not like any of the
contesting candidates.
If
the “None of the above” option will get maximum votes, it would mean that all
the Contesting candidates have been rejected by the voters. If this happens,
National Election Watch wants a re-election to be held in and none of the
previous contestants should be allowed to contest again.
Its high time to understand the situation and our Politician , Media and We should stand and react to situation for bringing the right instruments in place .We are proud of being a democracy , So many countries have failed to ensure that and their condition is worse . In all available format of administration Democracy is best .There is always an scope for improvement and Learning. We must learn from our experience and improve with our knowledge.
Very well said Srinidhi. I really do hope this system stops rotting.
ReplyDeleteUKR
Thank You Mam .
ReplyDeleteSrinidhi well researched and very fluently expressed .
ReplyDeleteVery valid points Shrinidhi... As for Right to Reject is considered I personally feel that it is necessary but don't you think it would add to costs incurred for conducting elections... A normal loksabha election costs the country more than 1000 crores, (1999 LS elections costed 880 Cr on papers)
ReplyDeleteSo re-election in case of no majority would lead to double costs..
What do you think about it?
